LibPositives Spotlight present Savanna Lorpu Karmue
Born to Quanuquanei A. Karmue and Wendy E. Karmue (founders of Save More Kids), 11 year old Savanna L. Karmue is an author, social entrepreneur, reformer, activist, future cardiologist, and the president/founder of Happy Heart Advice, Inc.
At six, Savanna took interest in the heart after visiting a local hospital where her Sunday school teacher was to undergo a heart procedure, during which time she met with the cardiologist. This sparked a curiosity and deep appreciation of the human heart and its importance. She soon realized that she also wanted to become a cardiologist in the future. Upon further research and learning that heart disease kills thousands of people daily—also learning that 1 in 3 of her peers were suffering from childhood obesity, the major cause of heart disease—Savanna decided that she wanted to help make a difference in the cardiovascular world. She started a YouTube channel where she made videos sharing ways to have better health and happy, healthy heart.
At the age of nine, Savanna decided to place all her happy heart advice in a single book, titled Happy Heart Advice, Vol. 1. With the help of her parents, she started her own nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people take control of their health and live better lives. Happy Heart Advice made available copies of Savanna’s books to families and organizations for purchase to help educate them on the importance of heart health. In her quest to fight heart disease, Savanna has decided to focus on childhood obesity.
In 2016, Savanna launched the Happy Heart Challenges, which provides over 300 hundred children and families with education and empowering resources for healthy living. Savanna has recently set a goal for her organization to fight and cut down childhood obesity in half by 2031, the year she graduates from medical school. To accomplish this goal, Savanna seeks partnership with elementary schools and school districts across the state of California to become a Happy Heart School. By 2025 , her hope is that every elementary school in the United States will become a Happy Heart School. Savanna’s anticipated impact by 2031 is over 15 million children, not including adult family members.
At such tender age, Savanna has already accomplished a lot. In 2017, she was honored by the American Heart Association for her work and impact in the health community at such an early age. She has also been a keynote speaker at many events, including the 9th Biennial Obesity Conference in San Diego where she shared insightful information on how to implement healthful eating into everyday adolescent lifestyles; the Optimist International Governor’s Ball in Sacramento; the American Heart Association, Heart at the Capital, Sacramento and many more.
