Fast Facts about the Bassa People
1. The Bassa people are a West African ethnic group from Liberia. They live in Grand Bassa, Rivercess, Margibi, and Montserrado counties.
2. They are the largest ethnic group in Liberia's capital of Monrovia. With an overall population of about 570,000 they are the second largest ethnic group in Liberia (13.4%), after the Kpelle people (20.3%). Smaller Bassa communities are also found in Sierra Leone and Ivory Coast.
3. The Bassa speak the Bassa language. They once had their own pictographic writing system, but it went out of use in the 19th century and was rediscovered among the enslaved in Brazil and the West Indies in 1890s. The writing system was reconstructed in the early 1900s by Thomas Flo Darvin Lewis. The revived signs-based script is called Ehni Ka Se Fa.
